In 1929 in New York City, Rev.
Mother M. Angeline Teresa founded the congregation of the
Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm. Her desire was to
preserve the independence and personal dignity of the elderly in
the spirit of the American way of life.
In 1954, His Eminence Richard Cardinal Cushing invited the
Sisters to take over the facilities of the old historic Carney
Hospital, founded on Dorchester Heights in 1863. It thus became a
nursing home and was renamed Marian Manor in honor of the Marian
Year of 1954. Renovations and additions have been added
since.
Strategic
Planning
For a number of years, administration and the governing body of
Marian Manor has studied its current and future needs in trying
to render excellent care to the elderly. While the Manor's
buildings have been renovated repeatedly, it became apparent that
the time had come to build a new, more state of the art facility
which encompasses assisted living and skilled nursing care. The
search for available land for this project has had to reach
beyond the borders of South Boston, and an 8.3 acre parcel of
land next to the Granite Links Golf Course in Quincy was
purchased late in 2005. PUD permits to build were obtained in
2006, and THW architectural firm from Atlanta, Georgia has been
working on the design of the new complex. THW is an award-winning
firm which has designed many senior living facilities, among them
two sponsored by the Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm.
In the new Marian Manor, there will be 22 memory support assisted
living units in the section known as "Memorare", and 245 skilled
nursing residents will be cared for in the nursing section. In
the new nursing facility, there will be a short-term unit, a
dementia unit, as well as traditional long term care services.
The Foundress of the Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm,
Mother M. Angeline Teresa exhorted the Sisters to continuously
meet the changing needs of the elderly. It is hoped that this
strategic planning endeavor will help Marian Manor fulfill her
mandate.
